Short Sleeves Insights – History Smiles!
When I tell people I taught history I’m always amazed at how often their response is, “Oh, I hated history. I didn’t learn anything worthwhile, just dates and facts.” That makes me sad because history is the greatest subject ever to teach and no one should find it boring. That’s just wrong! I suspect the reason that a lot of people didn’t like history was that their teachers didn’t tell enough stories. History is simply the story of people throughout time, and what’s more interesting to us than people?
Here is our strategy. Truth will be our headlight, so we can see to lead the train of rising generations down the right tracks into a future of peace and liberty. In the vast treasury of epic stories that comprise write my essay reviews, select and examine meaningful events or “moments” in ancient, early American, and modern times. You will see patterns emerge.
It is hard to be inspired by the sound of traffic or machinery or even DJ’s, even though they may play a role in your life, but give silence a chance to influence you sometimes too.
Being a white person in America with our own peculiar double consciousness is a bit like that. We have two contending souls within us, one of collaboration with oppression and the other one of resistance to it.
What made finding the Women’s History Project so triggering for me? It brought to my awareness how in believing I was less than a man I have driven myself trying to be good enough. It may be the 21st century but the state of women world-wide continues to need improvement. I believe women have to stop waiting for permission to express our genius and creativity in partnership with those who are working to better the lives women and children.
Of the thousands of writers I’ve worked with on preparing their scripts and pitching them, there is one single greatest and most common problem with the pitch (and usually the story itself ). The biggest problem is the plot! You might be thinking, “No kidding, Sherlock, how’d you get to be so smart–the plot is the whole deal.” But what I mean is this.
Comics studies have reported that laughing has a good effect on one’s physical and emotional health. When you laugh, the body tissues get more oxygen and the strengthened immune system fights off diseases. When laughter leads to hiccupping, your respiratory tract dislodges mucous plugs; and laughing for 10 minutes gives a good aerobic workout resulting from the increased vascular blood flow.
My Scottish ancestors came here with a culture of resistance and some with a strong class consciousness. Scotland after all had resisted English imperialism for centuries and when finally absorbed into the growing British Empire, became a focal point for the savage class warfare that accompanied the Industrial Revolution. Scotland’s national hero is the poet Robert Burns, who decried the poverty and oppression that stalked our planet in the late 18th century. There is a statue of Burns in my dad’s hometown in Vermont. He once gave me a battered copy of the Complete Works of Robert Burns.
Reading your Poetics textbooks and study material is no different. If you don’t have a structured way of approaching your studying, you’ll always be changing your approach and end up having wasted much time trying to decide how to study.
After all, how can you answer maths, science or social studies questions if you can’t read them? It’s impossible right? Yes, the ability to read is crucial and the better a child can read the easier they will learn in school.
Take notes consistently, not erratically. Taking notes is a great habit to get in to, so don’t let yourself only take notes a few days of the week. A good set of AP US history notes is great, but you don’t want to have notes that cover every third topic, or leave gaping holes in the middle of US History! To recap, organize your notes by topic, write down key words and their definitions, take notes consistently, and prepare for success!
